Old Dog New Tricks

Aussie rules

Hello Possums!

Here I sit befuddled with jetlag, beer in hand to the right, bickies and dip to the left, and the AFL Grand Final on a large screen in front of me. Yep, that’s right, I am back in the land of Oz. I am home.

Well not strictly home, I suppose (as I am currently of no fixed address); but back in the country of my birth with my backpack exploded all over the spare-bedroom floor of my oldest and most hospitable friend. I am in Mandura, just south of Perth, Western Australia.

It is so very strange to be back. It has been two years since standing on Aussie soil and, in the rare daylight moments I have been awake, I have been absolutely enthralled by localisms that used to be so familiar they completely escaped my notice. Bottlebrush, people! Rainbow lorikeets! Daggy old flannelette shirts! WOW!

As a matter of fact, I feel the calling for a list:

Jetlagged observations on returning to Australia

  • The accents. Oh my GOD! - the exquisitly hideous harshness! Heehee. And the funny inflexion that makes everything seem like a question yet is held forth in such a manner that you know you are not expected to answer. Maaaaate!?! :D
  • Separate hot and cold taps in the shower (instead of those weird European dial-type contraptions). So logical. So right.
  • Top-loading washing machines! Extra-Hooray! No more leftover socks that I can’t pop in at the last minute after having already starting the cycle (because the infernal English front-loading door has self-locked). Happy days!
  •  Power plugs that fit my power cords. No more adapters for my laptop and mobile charger and hair-dryer. Oh funny little electrical face, how I have missed thee!
  • Colourful plastic money. Soooo prrrrreeettty... *pats vibrant and conveniently-washable dollar notes*… now I just have to remember that they are real…  :D
  • Aussie beer ads. And Aussie beer! Half-melted ice in the esky and frosty-cold at last. :D

Got the bottlebrush – now for the bottles!...

Bottlebrush

But blah to jetlag. So sleepy. Must nap now... *Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz*........

.

Plastic money?! Awesome. Those bottle brush things are awesome as well.

Sounds like you are doing great girl! Only a little while longer you would do better with your fundinator around. :)

the most interesting thing about beer ads here is that beer companies think we need to be told or persuaded to buy beer.

the beer companies are by far the most inventive of all the other companies out there advertising wise (on tv)

You make it sound so lovely to get home. I wonder if I would feel the same way about England if I left for an extended time? I worry that it might have the opposite effect: "Oh God, Eastenders! traffic jams! Everyone being rude and thick!!"
Haha. Kind of.

Isn't it funny?

I think it's funny how you miss the little things when you're away from home. When I used to travel a lot for work, I missed the simple things like local radio and TV, knowing where all the good stores and shops where and seeing a weather map with city names I recognized.

Sounds like you missed the slang of Oz. We'll soon see if Fundy is confounded by its Ozziisms.

Meanwhile, who's doing how in the Grand Final? Oh, sorry, you fell asleep. Well then sleep tight.

Can't wait to be there

Hi babe, wow you are so far away now! Hope the jet lag buggers off soon, in a strange way I can't wait to be jet lagged as that means I'll be in Oz with you (tired abd grumpy from lack of sleep).

You are the rockinest babe. Love ya and your Aussie accents mAAAAAte!

So you are back in Aussie land. Back to those big spiders, snakes, and other poisioness little creatures. I wonder if the toilet water turns the same way as in england when you flush?

home sweet oz

I have never been further than two time zones from home so I don't know jet lag. Thusly I have not ever really been anyplace to make me homesick but I do miss my small town after a day or two in the psychotic city.
My best friend lives in Oz and she's getting married there in '08. If I can get my fears under control and save up enough I will be making the trip...and it's that accent everywhere that I look forward to most!!

I can't imagine being away from my country for that long. It must be amazing to see things from a totally different perspective. : )

I'm glad you made it back safe and sound and am hoping your Fundy is there with you way soon.

I can't believe it's been two years! Does it really seem that long ago?

Welcome home, pity the grand final was a bit of a bore (well I assume it was I didn't even watch it but with a record winning margin it had to have been sleep worthy anyway).

Now are you going to be a real Aussie and park yourself in front of the TV ALL day tomorrow for Bathurst?? hehe

Just wanted to check in and say hello, glad your site is up and running again. Any chance you'll be reposting all the old entries? I was just starting to read through them all when the site crashed and they were so interesting!

Hope you're enjoying rediscovering your homeland!

Take care and keep in touch!

That was two friggin' years?

Are you serious?? I can't believe that. And I'm still doing exactly the same thing as when you left.

MAaaaaaate!

I'm all self-conscious now. Do we really sound that ridiculous when we talk?
